An Allen's Hummingbird Story In Pictures

These links will take you to a breathtaking series of photos were sent to us by Terry Sowers. The series depicts a hummingbird nest with two eggs and follows the nest through the hatching, and eventual maturity, of its tiny occupants.
The nest was located at the Oso Flaco Dunes Nature Preserve on the Central Coast of California. Nests of the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, which we see in Ohio, look almost identical.

A friend of the Sowers', Vel, shot and edited the photos. Terry and his wife Susan recently visited the Lake Hope Nature Center to enjoy hand-feeding hummingbirds. Thank you Terry and Susan. :)

Another female 'hummer' dines on the 4th of July. There were a lot of females out for the feeding that day. Most of time it was raining, or at least drizzling. The weather didn't slow down hummingbirds. Some people had two and three of the tiny birds fighting for a sip at the same time. You can't tell in this picture, but this young woman's eyes were the same color of blue as her blouse, very pretty!
